Another Beautiful Year!

Thanks to our donors, partners, and volunteers, we were able to Keep Yankton Beautiful in 2021!

Beautification projects

The planting of three pear trees for Arbor Day and the installation of the donor sign completed our Marne Creek West Greenway beautification project, made possible by the generous contributions from Hydro Extrusions, Explorers Credit Union, and the Clark & Agnes Eide family. Next time you visit the dog park or community gardens, take a moment to enjoy this new feature! In October, we filled the downtown Walnut Street planters with a new array of fall foliage: dusty miller, ornamental kale, purple salvia and, of course, pumpkins! We concluded our beautification projects for the year with our 2nd annual Adopt-A-Pot planter project, filling the Walnut Street planters with festive winter greenery.

Recycling education & promotion The City's Household Hazardous Waste event returned this year, with KYB volunteering for the largest drive yet! Then, in honor of America Recycles Day (November 15), we partnered with Hydro to host our 2nd annual Plastic Bag Recycling Drive, diverting thousands of single-use bags from a lifetime of decay. To further emphasize America Recycles Day, we collaborated with the Yankton Community Library for a week of recycling-themed story times and crafts! Our year wrapped up with our participation in the Mead Hall of Trees, featuring our 152 recycled and repurposed ornaments, representing how many pieces of litter we'd all need to pick up simultaneously to make the earth litter-free! litter removal

Cleanup efforts Our April Great American Cleanup returned this year with over 160 volunteers ridding our community of more than one ton of litter. Our next Great American Cleanup is April 30, 2022. We hope you can join us! In August, we once again took part in the Riverboat Days Parade by cruising around with mobile trash receptacles to keep the streets clean. Then, in September we joined forces with Mount Marty University for their annual Mission Day, sending out over 100 volunteers on dozens of cleanup routes throughout town. The following month, we joined MMU for their inaugural Homecoming Day Parade, trash bags in hand!
